Today, I was lucky enough to meet a like-minded, gifted, young woman on the bus. Our chance conversation really brought to my attention what so many people face daily.
Now, we have never meet personally and I don't know your circumstances specifically, however I am betting there is some in your life and you know exactly who they are; would unload a double barrelled barrage of negative complaints. The complainer could be your fellow team member, your spouse, friend or family member. Let's hope that you are not a complainer!
Even before the words "Hi, how was your day?" can be spoken. A serial complainer will start launching into "Ah, you will never guess how horrible my work was". This statement is like opening the flood gates for dumping problems and frustrations. Serial complainers feel compelled to get of their chest, their frustrations and annoyances that they have been brooding all day long. Even worse, they drag up old complaints from last year that is still frustrating them.
Now, I don't know about you, but Deflated - Drained -Fed up! are three words I would use to describe how I feel after being on the recipient end of a barrage of complaints.
Complaining is terribly emotionally draining for everyone involved; the complainer and the complainee.
We all have choices in life. You are personally responsible for the decisions you make. I offer the following questions you can use to get the complainer to change their thinking:
Why would you choose to get up every morning and put their energy into a job you hate?
Why do you work with people who irritate you?
Tolerate the same old same old, just because it's good money?
Why do you get emotionally worked up and turn every little detail into a complaint? Why are you unhappy? If you had a magic wand, what areas would you wave the magic wand over and change?
To be truly empowered you need to realise that there is more to life than putting your energy into something you hate. If you unhappy being stuck and stagnate in a job, then change it! There is more to life than complaining constantly.
The challenge is getting serials complainers to realise that it's them - they are the reason they are unhappy. They have created these problems. You only get one chance at life, one opportunity to make the most of life.
