How do we deal with our Stinkin' Thinkin' and what happens when we do?
One of the beneficial pieces of information medical science has given us proclaims that if you change your attitude toward something you change the chemistry in your body. Every thought, we have is a physical event. Change the belief (the thought, the perspective, the judgment, the attitude, the belief), and we can change or, at the very least, influence the physical event we call our body mind. Yeah, we really can and it really does work. Our body secretes some powerful drugs in response to stimuli.
During the course of every year 98% of the cells of our bodies are replaced. Everything regenerates and changes and evolves. I am trying to make the point that every thing and everyone is in a constant state of change. It is possible for you to change your attitude and beliefs and change your life. I know because I have done it. It doesn't mean everything just goes away, but it does mean we don't have to let it continue to direct and define our lives. We can stop acting as if our opinions and perspectives have been carved in granite and began to become more dynamic, flexible, more open and more changeable, even inconsistent with whom we thought we were. YOU can create a new life starting in this very moment.
What I really want you to know is that we can change. We can redefine our internal and external worlds differently. We don't have to be a slave to our history. When you fully grasp the idea that your past is only a set of stored memories dragged into the present moment you can choose to say that the moment is no longer any more real or correct than the next set of thoughts and feelings you have. And in the next moment, you can make other changes in your thoughts as you choose. So why not choose a more life nurturing view of the world.
We do it by changing our point of view, by changing our beliefs and adopting values, principles and attitudes that reflect your highest and best choice of meaning and desires. Those choices are more real in the moment than any past memory. The great thing is that if you don't like one set of thoughts or beliefs you can choose again, and again and...
Most of my working life has been involved in helping people in crisis and life transitions. I started as a street cop where I learned to deal calmly with difficult and explosive situations. After graduating from college I left the PD and went to the largest independent insurance adjusting company in the world. Along the way I spent 6 years as a shift supervisor with a large crisis center handling suicides, spousal abuse, drug and alcohol issues, rape, incest and people with codependency issues.
